Kearsney celebrates double win against Glenwood

Kearsney College had a fantastic sports weekend, beating Glenwood in basketball and cricket.

KEARSNEY College basketball teams played a variety of schools on Saturday, but the first team played four good quarters to soundly beat their opponents, Glenwood, 115-21.

Glenwood struggled to get the ball over the half way line in the first quarter and did not manage to score a single point as the Kearsney defense stifled them. Kearsney scored at will and led 29-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Glenwood began to settle down in the second quarter, scoring 10 points with two three pointers making up the bulk of their points. Kearsney scored 35 points going into half time with a convincing 64-10 lead.

Glenwood scored 11 points in the third quarter again making two three pointers and two layups when the Kearsney team fell asleep on defense. These were their last points of the game. Kearsney ran out winners 115-21, with the clock running for the last 15 minutes of the game. Kearsney looked ominous on offence and efficient on defense.

The game allowed the younger players much needed court time to show what they are capable of and they definitely came to the party.

Top scorers were L Donjeany (22 points), D Wimbush (18 points), P Barr (17 points, 7 assists, 5 steals), P Steenkamp (15 points, 4 steals), L Breytenbach (13 points), R Darby (11 points), G Luzalo (10 points) and J Ramaphakela (8 points).

Cricket

Kearsney won the toss against the star-studded Glenwood team littered with KZN players. A solid opening partnership laid a strong platform.

An opening partnership between Patrick McGrath (35) and William Patton (73) of 70 runs set up Kearsney for a big total. Unfortunately, the middle order failed to capitalise, but thanks to a good 35 not out from Steven Conway, Kearsney reached 216 for 9.

Kearsney’s bowlers restricted Glenwood batsmen on a wicket which got easier as the day progressed. Kearsney’s bowlers led by Carl Heunis with 3 for 43, and supported Michael Brokensha with 2 for 30 and Patrick McGrath with 2 for 32, kept the Glenwood batsmen under pressure and forced them into mistakes. Glenwood were bowled out for 177.

Kearsney won by 39 runs.
