Couple toasts to 55 years of marriage
John and Betty Osler were married on 6 October 1962.
DOONE Village residents, John and Betty Osler, who celebrated their 55th anniversary on Saturday, 6 October, are still in love and content with each other’s company.
John and Betty were introduced by a friend in England and it was love at first sight.
They got married after dating for only six months.

John worked for a construction company in York, a city in England and Betty lived in Leicester. He had to travel about 200km to see Betty every weekend.
After they married, Betty moved in with John in York.
The couple moved to South Africa in 1970 and have lived at Doone Village for the past 17 years after living in Kloof and Gillitts for many years.
Although John is 82 years old, he is still one of the trustees in the Master Builders Association and Betty was a member of the fund-raising committee at Fulton School for the Deaf for 20 years.
They have two children, four grandchildren and two great grand children.
When the Highway Mail asked the Osler’s what they liked about each other, Betty said John was a little older as she was only 18 and John was 27 when they tied the knot.
“We got married a week before my 19th birthday. He was kind, gentle and soft, he treated me like a lady and spoiled me,” she said.
John said they have been together for 55 years and are used to each other.
“I do not know where the time has gone, but we still love and care about each other very much,” he said.

John said the challenge they had in their marriage was because of his work.
“I use to travel a lot but I made time for my family.”
Now that they do not work full time, they do most things together and one of their hobbies include singing and they are both in the Doone Village choir.
Besides singing, they also go to malls.
“My husband loves shopping and going to shopping centres, so I have to tag behind him,” said Betty.
The couple advised young couples to talk about their problems and try to sort them out as divorce is never an answer.
