#DurbanStorm claims the life of Highway paramedic

The dedicated paramedic and his partner were injured during an accident in Tuesday's devastating #DurbanStorm.

HAILED as a hero, ER24 Highway paramedic, Vicky Govender, succumbed to his injuries he suffered when he and his partner placed their lives on the line to save others during the Durban storm on Tuesday.

Govender and his partner, Tracy Bederson were dispatched to an accident scene during the storm.

Due to flooding on the N2 southbound carriageway, their vehicle aquaplaned and overturned several times before it came to rest on its side.

The Highway paramedics suffered serious injuries and Govender had to undergo several surgeries while in ICU.

Govender died during the early hours of this morning (13 October) while Bederson, who fractured her arm remains in a stable condition in hospital.

According to ER24’s Werner Vermaak, Govender had been a paramedic for ER24 for the last 15 years. He was married with children.

“The whole EMS team is devastated by the loss. We have received calls of condolences from paramedics from as far up as Johannesburg who said they had learned so much from him. They said he was a true inspiration and truly has a passion for what he did,” said Vermaak.

ER24 and Highway Mail teams send their condolences to the friends and family of Govender and wish Tracy a speedy recovery.
