Five attractive gardens featured at Kloof Rotary Ann’s Open Gardens

KLOOF Rotary Ann’s will once again host its popular Open Gardens in the Kloof, Gillitts and Winston Park areas on the weekend of 14 to 15 October from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

There are five gardens in fairly close proximity to one another. The gardens range from large to complex size.

Four of the gardens are designed and maintained by the owners.

This year, the tea will be served at Fulton School for the Deaf where there will be cars on display, plants for sale and several other items.

The school grounds will accommodate the parking for garden No. 3 which is directly opposite the school. Wors rolls will be on sale at Garden No. 2. There will be limited parking on site at garden No. 5.

Tickets cost R60, children under 12 are free. The ticket allows entrance to all five gardens and refreshments.

Tickets are available at the entrance to each garden and also at Kloof Village Mall Super Spar and Watercrest Super Spar. Tickets purchased in advance will be sold at R50 each.

To arrive at the first garden from Durban on the M13, take Exit 24 Marked Old Main Road/ Abrey Road. If approaching from the direction of Pietermaritzburg on the M13, it is marked Exit 2 same signage and follow the signs to the gardens.

Gardens:

Garden No. 1 – Ryan and Sarah Bruwer at 28 Impala Road, Kloof

Flat property with elevated garden from driveway. Manicured lawns edged with deep beds containing a multitude of different plant material. Roses abound in this garden and are snuggled up next to hardy shrubs. It has a formal potager garden and other areas where fruit trees and herbs thrive. There is a great play area for the children and a much loved fairy garden.

Garden No. 2 – Peter and Wendy Scorgie at 12 Tanglewood Gardens 12 Bartle Road, Gillitts

A large terraced complex garden. Paths lead down to an attractive perennial stream. The garden is reigned over by a majestic forest mahogany estimated at over a 100 years old. This creates a canopy for shade loving plants. The upper part of the garden has sun loving plants, roses, succulents and an attractive rockery. The garden is edged with many well established trees and bird life abounds.

Garden No. 3 – Jim and Sue Carmody at 5 Roosevelt Road, Winston Park, Gillitts

A sloping drive leads to a flat large garden some 40 years old. It is a park like yet sunny unique garden with some of its trees resembling giant sculptures. It is a formal design and harmoniously blends the indigenous with the exotics within the rockeries and shrub and flower-filled borders. It entices one to want to linger longer.

Garden No. 4 – Jan and Geline VanWyk at 5 Galloway Lane, Winston Park, Gillitts

This level garden has made good use of gravel and pebbles to highlight various plantings in an attractive manner. There are many nooks and hooks with wandering paths, with small bridges and an abundance of plants. There are water features and an added attraction is old farming implements within the beds. The main house has a slopping garden with a panoramic view of the gorge. There is a old and large flat crown tree on the edge of the garden with seating underneath where one can sit and enjoy the stunning view.

Garden No. 5 – Danna Flack at 10 Impangele Road, Kloof

An indigenous rockery full of wonderful plants and statues faces the driveway. The front garden has rolling lawns and deep beds filled with interesting plant material. The garden has four water features and many stunning sculptures from around the world as well as from local artists. Interesting features are a Thai Spirit House and a gazebo which houses a collection of bells from various countries. This is a large garden and will require time for you to take in its full beauty.
