Devastating storm leaves Molweni creche in dire straits

MOLWENI children who attend Celamandla Creche have been forced to play and learn outside after the structure they used as a creche was blown away by strong winds last month.

Teacher at the creche, Promise Cele, said they were using a community wooden hall as they did not have their own premises.

“My mom, Sylvia, started an organisation called Celamandla Community Centre in 2015. There were caregivers who would do home visits to check on the elderly, child-headed homes and people who are on medication.

“After a financial struggle with no sponsorship, she closed down the organisation and decided to start something else that would benefit the community,” said Cele.

Sylvia decided to open a creche as there was only one in the community and there were many children who stayed at home as their parents had no alternatives.

The creche currently looks after 44 children between three months and five years old.

“Even before the creche structure’s roof was blown away, we were already struggling. We did not have proper educational material as we were cooking outside. Parents pay only R100 a month which we use to buy food for the children.”

Primrose said they have resorted to cramming all the children into a tiny room which was used by the small babies as the weather has been terrible the past few weeks and they cannot teach the children in the rain.
