Cycling calf is CHOC’s hero

Jayden Moolman raised more than R5 000 for the CHOC foundation.

PINETOWN learner, Jayden Moolman, pedalled his heart out at the recent gruelling 100 Miles of Nowhere charity bike ride recently.

The gusty 13-year-old is a keen cyclist and a member of Westville Cycling club.

He takes on road races and mountain bike events whenever he can.

His first taste of 100 Miles of Nowhere was in 2016 when he stepped in to help out teams at the Westville Cadence Cycle Performance Centre.

This year he committed himself to raise the R1 000 needed to secure a bike for the annual fund-raiser and joined a team of his friends who opted to call themselves The Calves.

It started with his pocket money of R250.

He quickly rallied together family, friends and local businesses to raise more than R5 000, including securing R3 000 from local business, Panel Rite Autobody Repairers.

The Calves completed the 160 kilometres in an impressive time.

The same evening, he was cycling up a storm for CHOC, he was meant to be at the annual ROAG prize giving to receive the prize for taking third in the sub-junior series.

Not only did he miss the function to ride the 100 Miles of Nowhere, but he also gave his cash prize to the CHOC fund-raiser as well.

“Jayden has the right attitude to his cycling,” said his proud mother, Janice.

“He believes in having fun and believes in good sportsmanship, always. He also wants to use his talent for charity.”

Organiser of the KZN Herd of The Cows, Iris Varty, said, “Sometimes the real heroes of an event like this come from unexpected places. The Calves are such a clear reminder of what we set out to do as The Cows.

“To have a lot of fun, yes, but more importantly to go that extra mile doing what we love to be able to make a difference to children battling cancer. Jayden was the hero of the day.”
