Max’s reminiscing Facebook group goes viral

Good Ole Pinetown already has more than 10 000 members and is growing every minute

PINETOWN friends, present and past, are reconnecting by sharing news about Pinetown during its heyday via a new Facebook group: Good Ole Pinetown.

Set up by Pinetown resident, Massimo Rossi, better known as Max Rossi (57) on social media, the Facebook group has created bit of a buzz. Born in Italy and raised in Pinetown from the age of two, Rossi is an amateur radio operator and owner of Rossi’s B&B, also in Pinetown.

He is a Facebook fanatic. He said he started the group to reminisce as so many things had changed in the area since his childhood.

“When I started the group, it was all about digging up old memories of what Pinetown used to be like, and the response has exceeded my expectations,” said Rossi.

Former Pinetown resident, Brian Saunders, who now lives in the UK, has had personalised plates on his car to remind him of Good Ole Pinetown.

Good Ole Pinetown already has more than 10 000 members and is growing every minute. Its timeline is flooded daily with memories of old appliances, fashions etc dating back closely to the 60s until today. Popular are vintage photos, objects, games, television programmes and memes. Anne Mark from Pinetown described the group as a reunion platform.

“The community within the group and the respect and fond memories shared of Pinetown really are a testament to the area and the people.

The number of old friends reunited through Facebook via the group is phenomenal!” she said.

She referred to a comment from another group member that if the group could be highlighted by a popular TV programme such as Carte Blanche, it could spark similar groups around the country.

Sharing the same sentiments, Carolyn Ditchburn praised the group for the nostalgia it has brought to its members.

“Pinetown gets so much bad publicity and although so much has changed, it was a wonderful place to grow up in.” Of course the group has not been entirely positive and Rossi admitted that he has had to block a few members who went astray.
