MARINATE the meat, ignite the fires, and brandish the braai forks all in the spirit of Heritage/National Braai Day.

Heritage Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 24 September to encourage the celebration of culture.

As we shine the spotlight on Heritage Day, the Highway Mail spoke to residents about how they were going to spend the day.

– Thabile Zondi from Pinetown said Heritage Day was important as it serves as a reminder of her identity. “Heritage day will come at the right time for us this year as we will be having a traditional ceremony over the weekend, and on Sunday we’ll just have a braai.”

– Sonya Fobian from Pinetown said she is going to spend time with her family and have a good day braaing. “For me it is all about coming together as a rainbow nation to embrace our cultures.”

– Thapelo Dladla, a learner at Glenwood High School said: “I will be spending time with underprivileged children at Ukuphepha Children’s Home as I always do every year.”

– “Heritage Day represents our culture and it’s important to remind the youth about it because it is now mostly influenced by western culture,” said Jimmy Sibeko, a learner at Kloof High School. He also said that he will spend the day with his family, enjoying traditional meals.

– Roland Van Valk from Hillcrest said without Heritage Day, people would not be able express themselves because of modern influences. “I’ll be having a braai and will spend time with my family.”

– Shandre Pillay said the day was important to bring people together but most importantly to teach them about different cultures that are usually overlooked on a daily basis. She also said that she would spend time with her family and indulge in traditional meals.
