Manhole cover thieves nabbed in Pinetown

The two men were spotted with the stolen drain covers in Stapleton Road.

TWO men who were arrested yesterday by the community for stealing manhole drain covers in Pinetown appeared in court today.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele said the two were spotted with the covers in Stapleton Road, transporting them to scrap dealers.

“They were apprehended by patrollers who escorted them to the Pinetown charge office,” said Manqele.

Andreas Mathios from Blue Security said stealing manhole drain covers cost rate payers hundreds of thousands of Rands annually and the city is strict about how it deals with offenders.

The two men were charged with possession of property suspected to be stolen.
