Appeal for speed humps in Kloof turned down
Concerned resident, Edwin Kopke said nobody bothers to stop at Link/Bridal/King George intersection.
AFTER more than a year of pleading for speed humps on the busy and dangerous King George Road in Kloof, resident Edwin Kopke’s request for the bumps has been turned down.
Kopke, who refuses to accept this outcome, has questioned the transport authority about the criteria that needs to be met to erect a speed hump.
“Are they waiting for someone to die before they act? asked Kopke.

Earlier this year, the Highway Mail published an article about this intersection which is between Link/Bridal and King George Road.
Kopke said three vehicles crashed on his pavement last year.
“Nobody bothers to stop at the intersection.”
In 2016, three vehicles crashed into his pavement as motorists could not negotiate the bend on the road near his house.
“If it were not for the trees on the pavement, the vehicles would have ended up possibly in my baby daughter’s room. My car has also nearly been hit several times when I am trying to reverse out of my driveway, on a blind corner,” he said.

Kopke, who believes that speed humps may be the only way to slow down traffic, said he travels along Krantzview Road in Kloof to Pinetown every morning when he goes to work.
“This road in the past year or so has had multiple speed humps laid, then ripped up, new tar put down and now, there are no more speed humps being put down.
“The camber of the road is incorrect and the area is less than 300 meters away from a school. If the council can tar all over the place why not where it is needed,” said Kopke.
On Monday, 11 September, Kopke received a response from eThekwini which stated: “Please be informed that your request was duly assessed in accordance with the City’s Traffic Calming Policy. In terms of the assessment King George Avenue(Class 5) does not meet the requirements for the implementation of speed humps. As such the request for speed humps is not supported.”
