Westville celebrates double soccer win

WBHS beat Crawford La Lucia 4-0 and Maritzburg College 6-2.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School played a double header this past weekend against Crawford La Lucia and Maritzburg College.

Of the 10 goals in the two games, Westville’s Jordan Schwartz scored eight of these, proving himself a valuable striker for the Highway team. His hat trick in the Crawford game, as well as an own goal by Crawford, gave Westville the win 4-0.

Playing away at and against Maritzburg College, the home team came out the blocks well and played some intricate, brave and quick football from the back.

Initially Westville weren’t in sync defensively, but as the game progressed so did Westville’s pressing game. Pressure paid off in the 12th minute when a well hit free kick by midfielder Ismail Zuma, was parried away by the College keeper only for striker Jordan Schwartz to tap in the loose ball. 1-0 to Westville.

Three minutes later College equalised through a skillful, mazey run from their striker, finished off with a one-on-one chance with the keeper, straight into the top right corner. 1-1.

The game went into a tense 10-minute period as both teams looked to break the deadlock. Westville’s left back Caleb Carney showed some great skill to overlap and beat two college defenders before drilling in a low cross for Jordan Schwartz, who instinctively turned and back heeled the ball into the net to take the score to 2-1.

Westville got their third through a well taken corner from right midfielder Bonga Makhanya, whose well placed, lofted ball found Schwartz who controlled it beautifully and volleyed home for his second hat trick of the weekend. 3-1. College pulled a goal back through a late first half penalty for an alleged hand ball.

The teams went into the break at 3-2 to Westville.

Westville came out the blocks in the second half, and immediately piled on the pressure.

They pressed high and gave College absolutely no time and space to play.

Their set piece pressure was also building, as college struggled to defend the continuous bombardment of corners and long throws. Westville got their fourth goal in the 41st minute through a long throw by Westville captain Reece Nyland.

The throw was flicked on by midfielder Ryan way, and latched onto by the ever present Jordan Schwartz who headed home, 4-2.

The fifth goal came soon after, as Westville caught College on the break – Bonga Makhanya pushed a beautiful aerial through ball for Dave Bartholomew whose header lobbed the out coming College keeper for a wonderful counter attack goal, 5-2 to Westville.

The sixth goal came 10 minutes from time as Jordan Schwartz swooped onto a fumbled clearance from the college defense and hammered home a long range effort from the edge of the box – into the top left corner of the net, 6-2 to Westville to conclude the game.
