Meeting to highlight boom gate access in Kloof

Residents are hoping to reach an agreement with the council regarding the use of boom gates to improve residential security.

RESIDENTS are encouraged to attend a meeting on 22 August at Baker Manor in Kloof to discuss the idea of introducing boom access controls to make Durban residential areas safer.

Marilyn Duke from Safe@Home, an administrative company that helps with community and municipal communication, road closure applications and renewal of (boom) applications, said Durban was in a blurry line regarding boom access in residential areas.

“As we know the city is not in favour of them in general, they are turning a blind eye at present as they are an effective means of reducing crime, the idea is a free flow city and access should not be denied to any member of the public. However, the current crime trends are forcing residents to take their own measures and many neighbourhoods now control access illegally. The upcoming meeting is to try and get agreement to work with the council on finding a solution, both for the interim and long term,” said Duke.

The implementation of booms has proven to be an effective crime solution in Nelspruit, White-River, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

As Durban is one of the most crime-hit cities in KwaZulu-Natal, its community members are invited to collectively make a decision that will bring safety in the area.

The meeting will start at 6.30pm. For more information, contact Marilyn Duke on 031 764 7358, 082 774 6226 or email: dukemarilyn07@gmail.com.
