No hill too big for Andrew

Hillcrest's Andrew Hill is eager to take part in another Sappi Scottburgh MTB race.

DEFENDING champion, Andrew Hill, hopes to retain his title in the Sappi Scottburgh MTB race on Sunday, 13 August.

Should he claim another win, it will make him the first multiple winner of the respected men’s title.

Andrew described the Scottburgh event, which is run by local MTB enthusiast Flavio Scarpa and his team, as a raw and untamed track and it is something that he finds appealing.

“I really enjoy riding different trails,” he said. “I think guys get too hung up on smooth, manicured trails, but I really don’t mind riding rougher trails.”

“The Scottburgh MTB Club riders are a passionate bunch and they love to showcase their area at the race and this makes it special. There is a great vibe around the event and good media hype, so it is an event that I look forward to.”

He added that the race, which is the third leg of the recently formed South Coast MTB Series, also takes place during an ideal time of the year.

“I see friends in Cape Town complaining about the rain and the cold. The Sappi Scottburgh race is at a fantastic time of year here. It’s warm, and if we have a little rain beforehand to settle the dust, it can be brilliant MTB riding,” said the Hillcrest-based rider.

Andrew said he didn’t want to get too far ahead of himself by thinking about the possibility of becoming the first male rider to win the Scottburgh title more than once. “A consecutive win would be nice, for sure but I am just looking forward to riding the Scottburgh race again, and trying not to focus on the opportunity to set any records,” concluded Hill.
