Lunch and goodies for grannies

The pampering of the gogos came after a clean-up campaign in Desai.

FOLLOWING the discovery of dead bodies in three separate incidents in a bush in the Desai area, Mariannhill, Ward 13 councillor, Reginald Bouy Cloete together with the Parks Department and volunteers hosted a clean-up campaign on Friday.

Cloete said these incidents left residents feeling unsafe and fearing for their lives.

“We do not know if people were killed in the bush or were being dumped there but since the beginning of the year, three bodies have been found in those bushes.

“With the help of municipal workers and the community, we managed to clear the bush and it is now open and it will not be easy for people to hide in it or do illegal things without being seen,” said Cloete.

Wrapping up Mandela Month

After the morning of hard work, Cloete and some of the volunteers proceeded to the Mariannridge Hall to spend some quality time with the elderly people and treated them to lunch.

“While planning the campaign, we thought of something nice we could do for the elderly people as the Mandela Month was coming to an end. Spending some time with them, giving them them goodies and keeping them warm was what we came up with,” said Cloete.

The gogos who are part of the Happy Days Old Age Group were then invited.

One of the grannies, Katrina Swaart expressed her excitement, “We are very excited by this lovely gesture.

“This is very nice and we are very happy. As old people we love to be treated and that makes us feel very special. We are happy that we could be part of this as some of our friends are sick and others have have passed on and it is by God’s grace that we are still alive.”

She added that this event was more special to her as she is turning 80 on Wednesday. 2 August, “this is truly an early birthday present for me,” said Swaart.
