Fun outing, treats and gifts for Clermont children

Board member of St Clements, Lesley van Zyl made special boxes for the children to celebrate her 70th birthday.

ORPHANS and vulnerable children, who are cared for by St Clements Home Based Care, were taken out on an adventurous outing to learn and explore nature at the Palmiet Nature Reserve.

Jean Senogles from the Pinetown Rotary Club lead a walk and taught the children about taking care of the rivers, frogs and fish.

A family from New York, who are in Durban for school holidays, joined the children for the outing. Jess, Kate and Christian Foster, with the help of their mom, Soldi raised R 31 500 for St Clements early this year.

The money was used to buy uniforms and school shoes for every orphan registered with the home who needed one.

On the day of the walk, they also donated 300 pairs of white socks.

Their dad, Bradley and his partner, Angus Simpson, completed the gruelling Cape Epic and raised R 10 000 to buy the first computer and printer for a computer lab for children to use at St Clements.

Board member of St Clements, Lesley van Zyl, who recently celebrated her 70th birthday, made special boxes filled with toys and sweets for the children instead of having a party.

“Each year, we take the children on an outing and this year we chose the Palmiet,” said Lesley.

“I made the boxes and wrote a message in all of them which read celebrate life, have fun on foot and that they should always remember and be grateful to God who gave them life,” she said.

There was also a pastor from Serepta Church who was also orphaned as a child who encouraged the children and played games with them.

After the walk, the children were given gifts (beanies, scarves and jerseys) knitted by Pinehaven residents, given the boxes with special messages and sweet treats and enjoyed a braai.
