Adventurous athlete takes on world champs

Thomas More College's SPAR Star of the Month - June 2017.

THOMAS More College recently chose Bridget Theunissen as its SPAR Star of the Month.

Bridget was recently selected to compete in the (ITU) Multisport World Championships Festival in Canada  where she will participate in the X-Tri sprint distance which consists of a 750m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run.

Bridget competes in both a traditional triathlon, where she recently came 4th in the SA Champs, and in the X-Terra SA Champs, where she was placed 1st in her age group. The difference between the two disciplines, is that X- Triathlon is a swim, mountain bike and trail run. In a traditional triathlon, athletes compete on a road bike and run on the road. The swim is the same, either open water in a dam or ocean.

Bridget was also selected for the KZN duathlon team that will compete at the SA Champs in July at Midmar Dam.

Bridget’s interest in competing in triathlons developed more as a progression from years of enjoying outdoor sports, such as open water swimming, lifesaving, mountain biking and cross country. It was never about winning for her, but merely to have fun outdoors, and making sure she smiled for the camera.

When she realised she could combine all her top sports into one multisport discipline, there was a realisation she could be competitive at the same time. Always finishing and competing with a smile on her face, Bridget has not lost the fundamental importance of sport, which is to have fun and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

“To have achieved this wonderful opportunity, and be competitive in triathlon takes a huge amount of discipline and passion due to the hours spent training. The training is relentless in order to be competitive at national and international level. We are extremely proud of Bridget and wish her all the best for the championships in July and August,” said Kim Hooper, the marketing manager at Thomas More College.
