New classrooms for Siyanda crèche

Plans are afoot to refurbish the existing crèche building to be used for an office and storeroom.

FRIDAY was a day of celebration at Siyanda Crèche in Ntshongweni where the sod was turned for the building of a 64 square-metre double classroom – being built by Elangeni Buildings.

The Robin Hood Foundation’s Love to Read campaign, where volunteers visited more than 25 crèches, highlighted the plight of some of the poorest ones and it was Christian Social Services who suggested Siyanda Crèche as most in need of help.

The existing building needs refurbishment and a dilapidated wooden structure was to be demolished and replaced with ‘built classrooms’. Essential toilet facilities were needed as well as a kitchen for the hygienic preparation for food.

The foundation sprang into action immediately by launching a Buy a Brick fund-raising campaign and asked the public to donate R10 per brick.

Together with media partners, the Caxton Group, The Robin Hood Foundation raised more than R115 000 at the Mamba Republic evening for the crèche.

Steelbank in Pinetown has also generously contributed towards construction and as well as offering to provide a 36 square metre container to be converted into a kitchen and to pay for a person from the community to cook for the 46 children breakfast and lunch.

“But this is just the beginning,” said founder and chairlady of the Robin Hood Foundation, Cindy Norcott.

“We will follow up with equipment and furniture including mattresses, educational toys and teaching aids to give the children an excellent foundation phase education that will make a positive difference for many years to come, so that anyone would be proud to send their child to this school.

“We are so grateful to each and every person who has donated so far towards our ‘Buy-a-Brick’ campaign and encourage you to pledge your R10 and help us make a difference”
