Help CROW continue its mission of rescuing wild animals

There are many ways you can help CROW continue its vital work throughout KwaZulu-Natal.

CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) is one of South Africa’s longest serving wildlife rehabilitation centres and rescues, rehabilitates and releases more than 4 000 orphaned, injured and displaced wild animals throughout KZN.

As a registered non-profit organisation, CROW does not receive any government support or subsidies and is wholly reliant on donations from the public to continue its work in wildlife conservation and protection.

One of the recent cases at CROW involves a three-day-old baby Chacma Baboon, named Khaleesi. She was found abandoned in the Hluhluwe area in December 2016. She weighed in at a mere 950g and was emaciated and her little body was covered in ticks.

After four months of intensive rehabilitation, Khaleesi has adjusted well and is an active, healthy, young baboon with a bright future ahead of her. In the coming months she will be introduced to some of the other orphaned baboons in CROW’s care.

From there, the young baboons will be integrated into a troop in preparation for their release back into the wild.

In September 2015, four side-striped jackal puppies were admitted to CROW after they rescued from Zululand where a tractor crushed their den, leaving them without a home or a mother who fled during the ordeal.

After 18 months of intensive rehabilitation, the jackals were released late last year and are now thriving in the wild where they belong. They were fitted with temporary tracking collars to assist CROW (and others) with research on the species.

Although CROW shares a lot of happy memories of releasing animals back into the wild, there are also some heartbreaking cases to deal with. In March 2017, a female red duiker was killed in the quiet streets of Yellowwood Park due to a speeding motorist. The duiker was pregnant. The CROW team tried everything they could to save the mother and baby but unfortunately both passed away due to their severe injuries.
