11 Safety tips for joggers this winter

It is not advisable for joggers to take to the streets in the dark, winter conditions as robbers can hide in the shadows just waiting for the opportune moment to strike.

A FEMALE jogger was robbed of her jewellery in Malvern according to Malvern SAPS communications officer, warrant officer Radhika Marimuthua.

“During the jog she was accosted by a suspect and robbed of her jewellery. The suspect then fled and a case of common robbery was registered and is being investigated,” she said.

 

In light of this robbery, W/O Marimuthu has given the following safety hints for joggers and runners.

  • It is not advisable for joggers, strollers and runners to take to the streets in the dark, winter conditions as robbers can hide in the shadows just waiting for the opportune moment to strike. Criminals can also be driving around looking for a victim.

  • The victim is even less vigilant with headphones on, giving the criminal an advantage knowing his victim is focused on the music being played.
  • If you have to run, do it in large numbers which lessens the possibility of an attack. Even then, stay clear of trees, bushes, verges and dark areas and wear reflective clothing.
  • People often have the mindset that it won’t happen to them, but crime is dynamic and occurs anywhere and at anytime.
  • Vigilance is of prime importance especially when factors are working against you, like early sunsets in winter.

  • Always run in well-lit areas.
  • Be vigilant at all times and programme your phone with a speed dial for help.
  • Keep your cell phone concealed.
  • Don’t stop to give directions to anyone. Just keep moving and scream loudly if you are accosted.

  • Robberies can escalate into dangerous situations when weapons are produced.
  • Acting station commander of SAPS Malvern, Captain S N Khambula, advised the community to take heed of these safety hints which can save a life.
