Shongweni K9 police arrested for assault

It is alleged that the constables assaulted two men after stopping and searching their vehicle on 20 April 2017.

THE Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) have denied a that the two constables who were arrested for assault are linked to the murder of mom and teenage daughter, saying they are still investigating.

The brutal murder of Nomalungelo ‘Lungi’ Ncobela and her daughter, Nontobeko Vezi who were found with multiple gunshot wounds last week left the KwaDabeka community puzzled and fearing for their lives.

IPID spokesman, Moses Dlamini said the two constables, aged 30 and 37 are based at the Shongweni K9 Unit were arrested by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Thursday, 1 June for the alleged assault of two people.

“It is alleged that the policemen arrested and assaulted two men who were in a car together after stopping them and searching their vehicle on 20 April 2017. The assault occurred on a number of occasions over a number of days. The suspects also set their dogs on the victims,” said Dlamini.

After identifying the suspected police officers, the IPID obtained enough evidence to arrest them.

“The IPID is also investigating a case of intimidation and corruption against the constables. It is alleged that the
policemen went to one of the victims and told him to withdraw the assault case against them within three days, failing which he would be killed.

“The corruption relates to a demand of ten thousand rand made from the brother of one of the victims. These investigations are ongoing,” he said.

The two constables will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for formal bail hearing.
