Criminals aren’t filming you, says Westville SAPS

Westville police said "the community has nothing to fear".

WESTVILLE police have debunked the rumours that residents are being “watched” by alleged criminals who have strategically placed cameras outside the property to capture footage of them entering and exiting their homes.

The message sent via an alleged Westville resident went viral on social media earlier in the week, leaving Westville residents in a complete panic.

The message read that a resident found a wireless camera attached to his/her fence facing the garage and driveway which was strategically placed away from obvious discovery.  The message also claimed that the device had a memory card which contained more than 2000 images that it recorded and transferred through to an integrated sensor since last Friday. [No dates were given].

The ‘resident’ said he/she had handed it over to the police to be forensically tested with intentions to open a case to apprehend the culprits.

However, Capt Elizabeth Squires, communications officer at Westville SAPS said: “I have spoken to members of the station and they confirmed that no such case has been opened at the station. The community has nothing to fear.”

This is the message that the Highway Mail received via WhatsApp earlier this week.
