Recently eight monkeys, a cat, a dog and some birds were poisoned and killed in Escombe, Queensburgh. These animals allegedly ate some food from a residents’ bin.

“Killing monkeys is an unacceptable and illegal way of dealing with the presence of monkeys, and poisoning is certainly both immoral and illegal.”

“The use of poison in this manner is a contravention of laws governing the handling of poisonous substances,” said Steve Smit from Monkey Help line.

That case is still being investigated by the SPCA.

According to the Animals Protection Act, No 71 of 1962 where intent to cruelty has been sufficiently proven under section two states; Any person who lays or exposes any poisoned fluid or edible matter or infectious agents except for the destruction of vermin or marauding domestic animals or without taking reasonable precautions to prevent injury or disease being caused to animals; or shall, subject to the provisions of this Act and any other law, be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of up to R60 000 where the court is not a court of a regional division.

“A R300 000 fine can be issued where the court is the court of a regional division or in default of payment to imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years, where the court is not a court of a regional division, or not exceeding 15 years, where the court is a court of a regional division, or to such imprisonment without the option of a fine,” states the Act.

A recent case was a dog found with barbed wire tied around her neck and attached to a dead and decaying carcass of a second dog.

“The barbed wire was removed and the traumatised dog escaped and ran off.”

“She was found the next day by Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Outreach Officer, Sibonelo Gasa and our dedicated volunteer, Elaine Cairns and brought back to the Kloof and Highway SPCA for treatment,” said Kloof and Highway SPCA communications manager, Lisa Mörck.

According to Mörck this is one of the most gruesome and deeply disturbing animal cruelty cases that has been reported to the Kloof and Highway SPCA recently.

An investigation into the horrific act of animal cruelty is being undertaken by the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

The dog has been named Sindi and is now up for adoption.
