Crime awareness day empowers residents

The community enjoyed the informative demonstrations at the crime awareness day.

MALVERN SAPS hosted a multi-facted Crime Awareness Day at Escombe Primary School in Malvern on Saturday, 6 May.

The SAPS Airwing, Durban-South k-9 Unit, Malvern SAPS, the SAPS band, security companies, neighbourhood watches, business against crime partners, CPF, Life Medical, Metro Fire, and Tracker were among many stakeholders who participated in the awareness day.

“In the simulated mock carjacking sequence, the Airwing headed by Col Parsotham was cheered by the crowd as the SAPS helicopter circled the blue skies and then landed with K-9 Dog handler Sgt Kershan Naidu and K-9 Rocco leaping out to the fore in pursuit of the suspect,” said W/O Radhika Marimuthu, Corporate Communication Officer for SAPS Malvern.

They were followed by Malvern SAPS members who did a demonstration that ended with a high paced tackle by Sgt Kershan Naidu, K-9 Rocco and Sgt Nkwanyama with the ‘suspect’ Cst Engels being apprehended.

Metro-Fire’s demo included an extraction from a vehicle wreck using the Jaws of Life and putting out a simulated fire. The crowd was then treated to a volley of foam by Metro Fire in the peak midday heat.

 

Nicolene van Staden (Parkside Neighbourhood Watch), Don Maskell (Escombe Neighbourhood Watch) and Teresa Davie (MobiClaw 911) spoke to the crowds about the importance of security.

 

Malvern SAPS members and Tracker thereafter enacted a high speed chase of a carjacked vehicle. Using the Tracker signal, the carjacked vehicle was located and in the enactment the suspect fired at the police and tried to flee from the vehicle, but the suspect was apprehended in a fast paced tackle.

“The SAPS Band headed by Capt Seelan Pillay entertained the crowds with renditions of popular music,” added W/O Marimuthu.

Singer Eston Lloyd also joined the podium with his lilting tracks.

Local snake catcher Nick Evans captivated the crowds with his collection of snakes.

The children attending the event had their share of entertainment with pony rides and jumping castles. The public attending were treated to an array of treats from the fast food franchises and small business holders.

“The event was well received by the community who thanked Malvern SAPS for the insight into the lives of the men and women in blue who are committed to protect and serve,” added W/O Marimuthu.

Lt –Col Reddy, the Station Commander of Malvern SAPS said she was pleased with the day’s events and thanked all the specialised SAPS Units, Malvern SAPS members, all the stall holders and the community for attending and supporting this event as well as the K-9 Rocco.

Lt-Col Reddy further stated that more events will be planned in line with policing and community outreach programmes that will involve the community of Malvern.
