Safe playground built for baby house

The Natal Nomads transformed a muddy, unsafe outside area into a child-friendly play ground at the Baby House Westville.

THE Baby House Westville were the recipients of a R63 000 revamp to their play area from the Natal Nomads.

The Natal Nomads transformed a muddy, unsafe outside area into a child-friendly play ground.

The Natal Nomads is a golfing club and they have been raising funds for the needy for more than 15 years and have raised more than R30 million.

Captain of the golfing group, Gavin Brown said, “We heard about how the Baby House was battling to raise funds and asked for their wishlist and one of the things that popped up was a play area and we said, why not?”

“We are so grateful, we can’t even start to explain the difference it has made to the children,” Terri Wentzel from Baby House Westville said.

The primary focus of The Baby House is to care for and nurture the babies placed in their care until they are adopted.

She said before the children never really liked to play outside because of the condition of the yard, but now even the little ones who can’t walk yet enjoy lying on the artificial turf under the shade of a tree.

The running of The Baby House Westville requires frequent and ongoing fund-raising as government childcare grants are sporadic and corporate sponsorships are difficult to obtain.

Community awareness and donations allow the home to continue to exist and care for one of the most valuable but vulnerable sectors of society.

The Baby House’s needs are very much like that of a large family home – cleaning products such as laundry detergents, dishwashing liquid, disinfectants and baby consumables such as nappies, wet wipes, bath toiletries, formula (Lactogen 1 and lnfasoy 2), porridge, purity, fresh fruit and vegetables.
