Shane supports SPCA in memory of his sister

Shane's sister, Cherise Cox who was a Metro police dog handler was shot on duty.

IN memory of his late sister, former Kloof resident, Shane Cox has dedicated his life to continue a cause close to her heart, looking after animals.

Shane’s sister, Cherise Cox, who was a Metro police dog handler, passed away following a 10-year battle after being shot on duty during a foiled hijacking attempt.

On Friday, 26 May from noon to Saturday 12pm Shane, together with a fury friend, will be locked up in a kennel for the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s annual Dog Box Challenge to raise funds.

For 24 hours, Shane and other participants will sit in their respective cages in the socialisation area.

To be ‘released’ from the kennel, Shane needs to raise R 10 000.

Last year, Shane participated in the event and broke the target and raised R12 600 for the SPCA.

Every month Shane donates R300, R150 goes towards a dog kennel and R150 towards a cat kennel.

Shane, who still gets emotional when talking about Cherise, described his sister as a hero who would go out of her way to help.

“Even on the day she was shot, she was responding to a hijacking. She was in and out of the hospital for 10 years and passed away after she had 24 operations,” said Shane.

He said his sister was a good person who was loved and known by many people in the Highway community.

“Cherise was a bubbly, loving, honest and kind person who had many pets. I donated most of her belongings to the SPCA,” he said

Shane thanked companies and people who donated last year and pleaded for them to assist again this year.

“Any company or person is welcome to donate. Woodcutters in Kloof have signed up again this year to donate 10 per cent of the day’s making on Saturday, 27 May. Last year, they donated R1 000.

“Alternatively, people can make a collection and I will collect it or you can drop it off personally at the Kloof and Highway SPCA. Please don’t forget to mention my name,” he said.
