Donation helps learner roar with pride

The recent donation of R10 970 to Fulton School for the Deaf will ensure that a child will receive the specialised education they need.

WITH the continued support from the Lions Club of Gillitts, a child’s school fees at Fulton School for the Deaf has been covered for an entire year.

Andrew Palmer, the head of the local non-profit organisation, said the club had funds available for this donation and its members firmly believed in the school and the work it does.

“We have a big focus on programmes and services for the blind and visually impaired as well as the deaf and hearing impaired,” he said.

The donation of R10 970 covers the cost of one year of schooling at Fulton School for the Deaf, but the Lions Club of Gillitts has gone one step further.

It has also pledged to cover the running costs of one of its buses that ferries its children home at the weekends and fetches them again on a Monday morning.

Many of the school’s learners are from outside of the Highway area and board at the school on week nights.

“What people don’t realise is that there aren’t many schools for the deaf or hearing impaired and the children need to travel to get to school each day. Cutting down the running costs for the school will help them spend their resources on other items needed,” said Andrew.

The school’s principal, Beryl Campbell, said the donations and support were greatly appreciated as it helped the school immensely.

“It is wonderful! This means that we can provide the best education for another child who otherwise would not be able to come here,” she said.
