Waterfall College learners encouraged to give back

Learners from across the different grades at Waterfall College embarked on various outreach projects across the Highway area.

THIS year, outreach activities have kicked off at Waterfall College with a new level of excitement as learners find the joy of service across a range of activities, from helping and mentoring children to visiting and uplifting the spirits of the elderly.

This month, the Grade 8 and 9 learners collected food for Bridges of Hope for Children in Camperdown.

This is a non-profit home for abused, abandoned and orphaned children from 10 months to 14 years old. It currently looks after 18 children who were desperate for food.

The learners collected potatoes, bread, milk, tomatoes, onions, sugar, maize, rice, peanut butter, jam and canned food over three days.

After the collections, learners gave up their lunch break to help sort all the food for donation.

Jane Cansfield, teacher in charge of Waterfall College HOPE (Helping Other People Everywhere) said, “Teens are giving up their break to serve others! This is a testament to our students. They have such big hearts.”

On Valentine’s Day, the HOPE outreach committee members, Ronwyn Jacob, Candice Leslie, Janelle Dennison and Dylan Cooper, visited the PCC (Personal Care Centre) at Waterfall Gardens Retirement Village during their lunch break.

They delivered Valentine’s cards, hand-made by a group of learners, custom-made biscuits and cake. The residents were simply delighted

On World Read Aloud Day on 16 February, Waterfall College’s matrics spent their English lesson reading story books to the Grade 1 children of iThemba Academy. World Read Aloud Day is celebrated in 100 countries across the globe.

The school’s head of English, Vivienne Lamplough, said, “The ability to read is something we take for granted. In celebrating World Read Aloud Day, we are mindful of the many people in our country who cannot read and of the many children who do not have access to books. This special moment in a busy day is one neither the seniors nor the juniors will ever forget.”
