It is believed the 39-year-old man was working in his garage at home when an acetylene cylinder in the far corner of the garage exploded.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene and found the man lying next to a swimming pool. He allegedly ran and jumped into the pool after the explosion to cool down. Paramedics worked fervently to stabilise the critically injured man before they transported him to a specialised hospital in Durban,” said Botha.

Police are investigating the explosion.

Gian Paolo Polia (Paul) of the Pine Ridge Neighbourhood Watch, said they received an emergency call from a neighbour notifying them about the explosion at 6 Glide Road, Farningham Ridge.

“The emergency phone operator for the week despatched patrollers to the scene. Barry Hall, a Pineridge NHW patroller was the first on scene. He assessed the situation immediately and contacted SA CAN and the ambulance service through the CCR community channel sponsored by ADT. Emergency services where then despatched to the scene. Pineridge patrollers controlled and secured the scene  in case of a second explosion and the injured resident until emergency services arrived,” added Polia.
