Visit the Mariannhill Hindu Temple in early February to take part in the auspicious flag raising ceremony.

THE Mariannhill Hindu Temple will host two flag hoisting ceremonies in early February to mark the festival of Thai Poosam Kavady.

The annual Thaipoosam Kavady Prayer draws thousands of devotees from around the globe and all walks of life.

This mammoth thanksgiving festival is held in honour of the deity, Muruga, the granter of wisdom, inner strength and happiness.

“It is observed during the appearance of the Poosam Star and in close proximity with the appearance of the full moon in the tenth Tamil month of Thai,” said the chairman of the Mariannhill Shri Siva Soobramaniar Alayam (hindu temple), Ravi Naidu.

The 12-day period began on Tuesday, 31 January and the first flag raising ceremony is on Thursday, 9 February at 8am and the convenience day ceremony is on Saturday, 11 February at 1pm.

The Poosam Star is visible on 9 February ar 6.45am to 2.49am on 10 February.

The full moon can be observed from 3.54am on 10 February until 2.49am on 11 February.
