Kamz’ puts Malvern on comedy map

The Queensburgh resident aims to become an international comedian.

COMEDY fan turned comedian, Kamz Govender, said stand-up comedy is his calling and thinks he has what it takes to keep Durbanites in stitches.

“I would watch stand-up comedians in awe and think to myself, how do they do it? And I’d think to myself that are surely not human. To take anything and make it funny, to me, was, wow, how insane,” he said.

Govender, a Flamboyant Park resident, describes himself as an electronics technician by trade who has now been reborn into the comedy world.

“I actually did not realise comedy as a passion until I performed at my family’s restaurant. I was asked to host my mother, Anasia’s comedy show and I had to write some jokes of my own. I decided to go for it and from then on, my mother encouraged me to enter the On Fire Young Guns Competition at Amsterdam bar in Glenwood. I did, and was a finalist,” said the animated 22 year old.

His stint at the show lead him to do opening acts for the likes of Johannesburg based stand-up comedian, Dillan Oliphant, winner of the newcomer of the year award at the Annual SA’s Comic Choice Awards in 2012.

“The Next Comedy Generation is just an amazing platform for young comics to gain exposure. I am personally a product and I got to where I am with the aid of the continuous public support. We urge everyone to support young local comedy,” said Govender.

His name is growing in popularity in the local comedy circles and with shows averaging between five to 10 in a month, there is no telling where and how far the Malvern resident is going.

“I’ve been so blessed to have two of the best stand-up comedians in the country mentor me, Carvin H Goldstone and Neil Green. “They have taught me all I know about this line of entertainment. I aim to go all the way with stand-up comedy. It’s my dream so I’ll keep on keeping on, learning and getting better to become an international comedian one day,” he said.

So, why should you spend your hard earned cash to see him? “I do a very unique style know as deadpan, which means “just stand and deliver”. No movement. I am a one-liner comedian which consists of wit and puns flavoured by my humor. You have to listen to get my jokes,” he said.

While comedy is now the main focus, Kamz said if he was not doing comedy then he’d would still be in the industrial automation field as an electronics technician, his other passion.

Catch Kamz Govender at Sibiya Casino on Friday, 27 January where he performs at the show, Mixed Masala . He will host The Next Comedy Generation show at the Bat Centre on Saturday, 28 January and at Marine Parade for Durbs Comedy Night on Saturday, 4 and Sunday, 5 February.
