New Germany man gets R5 000 bail for drug possession

News of his arrest spread widely on social media and was received with outrage from the community, as they believe he was wrongfully arrested for producing medicinal drugs.

THE 59-year-old man who was arrested for producing and supplying various cannabis products in New Germany, was released on R5 000 bail.

He appeared before the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 16 January, after he was arrested for possession of 164.4 kilograms of higher grade compressed dagga and 640 litres of benzine and magic mushrooms on Sunday, 15 January.

The street value of the seized dagga is approximately R1-million.

News of his arrest spread on social media and was received with outrage from the community. It is alleged the man was wrongfully arrested, and that he was producing medicinal drugs – cannabis oil – to treat cancer patients.

Here are some interesting responses from the online community:

Durke Naude wrote: “So we arrest a producer of medicine and call him a drug dealer….let’s arrest all pharmacists and doctors too then! #freeweed!”

Alexander Dowding wrote: “This man is not a criminal. He is a caregiver to many desperately sick South Africans. The government ought to hang their collective heads in shame at maintaining the enforcement of this barbaric, outdated legislation. I am disgusted.”

Samantha Ede wrote: “This so called “drug dealer” has probably saved more lives than the people who so “bravely” arrested him. Really? They say well done? You go into a humble man’s house, and arrest him for what? Making medicine? Helping people? Yet murders and rapes are our everyday life? But no! Cannabis is illegal right? Oh and our “healers” (not dealers) are apparently easy targets. Makes my blood boil. #freeweed”

Sandy Muldoon Harvey wrote: “Why don’t the SAPS concentrate on tracking down real criminals instead of people who are actually doing good for humanity? This is sickening, to me it shows that the police look for soft targets – much easier and less dangerous. This country needs to get with the rest of the world in recognising the huge benefits of the healing properties of Cannabis, or are we just going to let the large pharmaceuticals continue robbing us blind and poisoning us with their chemicals?”

· An announcement was made in Parliament in November 2016 that access to medicinal cannabis for prescribed health conditions will soon be regulated by the Department of Health.
· Highway Mail is awaiting feedback regarding the current laws relating to possession, creation and distribution of dagga from KZN SAPS.
