One killed and 17 injured on Highway roads

The man in his 60' was hit and killed by a truck in New Germany.

A spate of accidents accompanied yesterday’s rainfall. A man, believed to be in his 60s was killed in an accident yesterday and 17 and other people were injured in two more. According to ER24 spokesman, Russel Meiring ,paramedics found the man lying in the left-hand lane of the road with the truck parked just a few feet away in Escom Road at about 4pm.

“The man was assessed and found to suffer numerous injuries and was declared dead on scene,” said Meiring.

The driver of the truck was also injured. There were also reports of two accidents on the N2 North-bound near Westwood Mall which left 17 people injured.

“In the first collision, a car carrier collided with a bakkie before coming to rest in the median. Both drivers had various injuries and were stabilised before being transported to nearby hospitals,” said Garrith Jamieson from Rescue Care Paramedics.

In the aftermath of the truck accident and amid the back-up traffic, three taxis collided into each other.

“Multiple patients were found more ambulances were dispatched. Fifteen people sustained various injuries and were stabilised before being transported by ambulances to various hospitals,” said Jamieson.

The cause of these accidents are unknown at this stage.
