Water leak tests patience

Anton Diedericks said that his biggest concern with the leak is the water crisis currently faced in the province.

AN unresolved water leak has left Escombe resident, Anton Diedericks, helpless and frustrated. The three-week leak has caused damage to his lawn and has made holes and created slime on his driveway.

“The leak runs 24/7 from the verge outside and into my property. The water department has been to check on the leak but instead of fixing it, they told me that the leak comes from inside my property which is why they cannot fix it,” he explained.

Close inspection revealed that the source of the leak is indeed coming from the street and into his property. Diedericks said that his biggest concern with the leak is the water crisis currently faced in the province.

“Animals are dying and people do not have water in their taps and eThekwini is not helping to stop the problem. I have a water tank in my yard, it is my way of doing my bit to help in this situation,” he added.

eThekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa, said as a caring city, the municipality has a dedicated team of staff members who strive to provide superior service to all city residents and that service delivery remains their key priority.

“The relevant unit has been tasked to attend to the matter urgently. Officials from the unit will conduct a site visit that will determine the necessary action to be taken. The municipality urges residents to continue reporting illegal water connections and water leaks to the number 080 131 3013 or send a message on the WhatsApp Water Reporting Line number, 073 148 3477,” she said.

Residents can also send an SMS to 43554 to report water leaks or e-mail Eservices@durban.gov.za.

“The quicker eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) is informed about a leak, the quicker they can respond and address the matter to prevent further water loss,” she added.
