Mourners gather to remember Field’s Hill crash victims

RTI and Metro Police also clamped down on unroadworthy vehicles during the ceremony.

OFFICIALS from the Department of Transport and its agency gathered on World Remembrance Day, to pay tribute to the 24 people who were killed in the 2013 Field’s Hill horror truck crash.

The event, hosted on Sunday, 20 November, was held to remember the millions of people who were killed, injured and affected by road crashes on the roads worldwide. It was also used to reflect on the tremendous burden and costs which road crashes place on families and communities.

Officials from the Department of Transport and its agency, the Road Accident Fund, gathered at the intersection of the Field’s Hill off ramp and Old Main Road to pay tribute to those who were killed during the tragic crash three years ago. The officials laid down nine beautiful wreaths at the accident site.

Members from the RTI and Metro Police, hosted an awareness campaign at the intersection and pulled over dozens of vehicles which passed under the bridge, fining those that were found to be unroadworthy.

World Remembrance Day was followed by the third Annual National Road Safety Summit at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban.

The aim of the National Road Safety Summit was to address issues of road safety in the country and make contributions to the country’s road safety strategy that would assist in the reduction of road accidents by 50 per cent in 2020, as stipulated by the United Nations in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.

This year’s summit reflected on the resolutions of the past summit, progress was discussed and other road safety interventions that will be implemented.
