Not all angels have wings

Letter to the Editor - week ending 4 November.

EDITOR – Wednesday, 26 October was not a good day for motor cycling. My little scooter, Kymie, thoroughly agreed with me on that. She started muttering under her breath before we had gone 2km along Inanda Road from Hillcrest.

Being a trusting soul, I opted for the route through the gorge from Acutts Drive to Everton Road. We got through but the complaining was becoming more intense. The freeway was even less to her liking and with open revolt looming, I left the freeway at the Maytime off-ramp. There we sat in the mist, while I tried to explain to Kymie that we needed to get to Pinetown as she was booked in for a service. After five minutes she saw the point and we set off again, but very jerkily. A putt-putt here and a putt-putt there type of thing. Through Kloof we spluttered along with the heavy morning traffic.

Bumper to bumper cars from Pioneer Road were jostling with bumper to bumper cars on Old Main Road for access to Field’s Hill. Kymie got me through this morass but then with a sigh, said, “Stuff this for a ruddy joke, enough is enough” or something to that effect. With that she died completely. We free-wheeled down to Tracy Watts drive where we could pull off the busy road.

I was unable to contact the garage which had moved premises and changed telephone numbers. I imagined that the best strategy was to catch a lift to Pinetown and walk to Crompton Road. Little did I know the distance involved. Before I had even walked to the stop sign 10m away, to plead a lift, an angel arrived. No, she would not take me to Pinetown, she would take me to wherever I needed to be. I was dropped, not on the road in front of the garage but right to the front door.

What a wonderfully kind person she was.

Now, I am worried, was her name Tracy or was she telling me the name of the street? Whatever the case, I would like to thank her by taking her to lunch. It is not every day that one meets an angel.

Should she, by any chance read this, I ask, “Please contact the Highway Mail and they will give you my contact details. I would be delighted to hear from you.
