Dance drama to showcase a woman’s strength

The compelling dance drama will be staged at The Playhouse in Durban for one performance only.

KANNAGI Kovalan, a compelling dance drama by Sivani Chinappan, will be staged at The Playhouse in Durban for one performance only on Friday, 7 October at 7.30pm.

Kannagi Kovalan is an English adaptation of the ancient Tamil epic, Silappathikaram, or The Tale of the Anklet. The bi-lingual story focuses on the strength of women by journeying through the lives of two extraordinary characters, Kannagi and Madhavi, who suffer at the hands of fate, and society’s expectation of the ideal world and woman.

Award-winning stage and radio actress, Sivani Chinappan, takes the helm as director and choreographer, and hopes to inspire and encourage people, and to promote heritage language among youth.

‘It’s time to listen to the voices of powerful women, and for us to acknowledge their soul power, their sakthi, as both potent and sacred. It is this potency that gave us Velliammal, Dr Gonam, Phyllis Naidu, Fatima Meer, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Amina Chachalia and Navaneetham Pillay, to mention a few,” said Chinappan.

Principal cast members appearing in Kannagi Kovalan opposite Sivani Chinappan as Kannagi are Logasen Moodley who plays her husband, Kovalan, and Thashreiya Phillips who takes the role of Madhavi. Headed by Kisten Chinappan. The production’s supporting cast includes Sitara Moodley, Yolisha Moodley, Manimegalai Moodley, Levedhan Naidoo, Renaisia Moodley, Tammy Govender, Tamarin Govender, Yash Bridgenath and Prinolan Naiken.
