Brave cop injured in shootout with armed robbers

The Pinetown policeman was shot in his hand after he intervened during a robbery in Old Main Road.

A PINETOWN policeman is recovering after he was injured during a shootout in Old Main Road with five robbers on Sunday, 18 September.

TH policeman was walking to work when he noticed five men breaking into a motor vehicle dealership at about 6am. The police officer was slightly injured during the shoot-out with the suspects. “There were at least five robbers inside busy stealing property. He saw a suspicious-looking white Mercedes with its doors open near the premises,” said Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane, provincial SAPS spokesman.

The policeman approached the robbers and when he was spotted they opened fire on him. The brave police officer returned fire and was shot and injured on his left hand index finger and was later rushed to hospital. The robbers fled the scene in their getaway vehicle, along with the computers they stole. A case of attempted murder and business burglary was opened at the Pinetown police station.

KwaZulu-Natal’s acting provincial commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa, commended the brave police officer, “I wish the member a speedy recovery from hospital. The robbers are still at large but our police officers, assisted by crime intelligence, will work around the clock to trace these criminals,” he said.
