Kearsney College’s weekend sports round up

The school teams enjoyed action packed matches in rugby, soccer and even a round of golf.

KEARSNEY College enjoyed another action-packed weekend of rugby, soccer and golf.

Kearsney participated in the two-day DHS 7s tournament at the weekend, playing on Friday afternoon and the whole of Saturday. Kearsney was unbeaten in the pool rounds, defeating Clifton 34-12, Bergvlam 17-14 and St Charles 26-7. They then beat Westville 17-7 in the quarter-final.

Unfortunately due to injuries Kearsney only had nine players to play in the semi-final against DHS 2, and ultimately this could have been their undoing. Regardless of this challenge the team competed admirably, losing 17-22. Early in the match Kearsney let in two tries and did well to fight back. With only a couple of minutes left on the clock, the scores were tied at 17-17. But DHS capitalised on Kearsney’s bad discipline to take the game.

James Sutherland and Daniel Cherry played consistently well for Kearsney.

In soccer news, Kearsney drew their final fixture of the season against Westville Boys’ High School on Saturday, when the wet conditions made it difficult for either team to control the game, making the initial exchanges scrappy.

Westville went ahead midway through the first half via a penalty kick. The goal seemed to spur on Kearsney, as Luke Croshaw twice came close to scoring from two set pieces. The hosts’ break-through came at the end of the first half when Kyle Koenig neatly snatched on to a Luke de Vlieg cross and slotted past the Westville goalkeeper.

The second half was a brisk affair with both teams going for the win. Kuhle Bohela hit the top left corner of the goal, only for the keeper to make a fine save. From the ensuing corner Keenan Naidoo was denied on the line after a very good cross goal header. The game ended 1-1 with both teams sharing the spoils. It was an exciting end to a good season for the Kearsney boys who only lost two games, while recording great wins against DHS, Clifton, Hilton and Michaelhouse.

In golf news, Kearsney beat DHS 4-0 at Royal Durban during the week.
