Residents urged to use water sparingly before shutdown

eThekwini Municipality has assured residents that water tankers will be available should the interruption last longer than the stipulated time.

IN an attempt to ease the impact of the planned water shortage, the eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to store water and use it sparingly before the start of the interruption.

The water shutdown will affect certain eThekwini areas from Thursday, 8 September.

Tozi Mthethwa, eThekwini Municipality’s head of communications reminded residents that Umgeni Water has to carry out essential work at the Midmar Dam raw water pump station.

“In order for this work to be executed quickly and effectively, the raw water supply from the Midmar Dam to the Midmar Water Works and DV Harris Water Treatment Plant will have to be shut for an estimated 30-hour period.

“Work at the Midmar Dam raw water pump station will commence on Thursday at 8am and is scheduled to be completed on the afternoon of 9 September.”

Mthethwa said water will be available for as long as there is water in the reservoirs.

“Industries and businesses should not be affected as they have their 48 hour back up water storage.

“Water tankers will be available should the interruption last longer than the stipulated time,” she said.

The areas that will be affected include: Ntukuso, Mpuma, Imbozama, Sthumba, Amatata, Bhobhonono, Madwaleni, Gezanyoni, eMvini, Panekeni, Nonoti, Diphini, Qhodela, Denge, Gasa Section, Umlahlanja, Siweni, Rietvallei, Othweba, Harare 1, Cuphulaka, Mngcweni, Harare 2, Harrison, KwaCele, Cato Ridge, Esikhelekehleni, Inchanga Park.

Camperdown NU, Ntshongweni, Olwambeni, Mpumalanga East, Alverstone AH, Sankontshe 1,Emalangeni, Zwelibomvu, Zamani 2, Cliffdale, Sankontshe 2, Ezitendeni, KwaNtamontengayo, Sterkspruit, Thandaza, Moya, Kwambiza, Bucks Farm, Georgedale, Kwalandeza, Ediphini section,Summerveld Racing, Estabishment Mophela, Mpumalanga west 1, Ezakhiweni, Mpumalanga west 2, Emangabazini, Mpumalanga unit 1 south, Emagezeni, Mpumalanga unit A, Egwadeni section, Mpumalanga unit 1 north, Kontinga, Salem, Mandlakazi 1, Seveenteen, Wathanga, Luthuli, Kwadlembe, Ekwandeni and Mandlakazi 2.

Residents are urged to save every drop of water and continue to report leaking and burst pipes to the 24-hour contact centre on 080 1313 013 or email eservices@durban.gov.za.
