Ballot boxes found at Girl Guides hall in Northdene

The IEC is conducting an investigation.

MALVERN SAPS and the IEC officials were alerted to ballot boxes that were found at the Girl Guides Hall in Northdene yesterday, Friday 5 August.

According to Liesel Mortlock, a Girl Guides leader, they went to the hall, which was used as a voting station on Wednesday, 3 August, to conduct their Brownies meeting, and discovered the boxes.

“One box was completely sealed and another was a little open on one end. It looked like completed ballot papers, all registered to Ward 63,” said Mortlock.

She immediately contacted the Malvern SAPS and the IEC office. The area was cordoned off and treated as a crime scene on Friday evening. IEC officials gave the SAPS the directive to confiscate the ballot boxes.

Radhika Marimuthu, communications officer at the Malvern SAPS, was unavailable for comment.

At this stage it is believed the ballot boxes were abandoned by the IEC officials on Wednesday after the voting station closed, but its pending a full investigation.
