67 000 sandwiches to be made this Mandela Day

The Shoprite Group has committed itself to making 67 000 sandwiches to help feed local communities this Mandela Day

THE Shoprite Group has taken heed of former president Nelson Mandela’s call to address the issue of food security and has decided to make 67 000 sandwiches to donate to local charities this Mandela Day. They have also pledged to keep doing so every month until Mandela Day 2017.

This initiative is a part of the Group’s Hunger Relief programme which involves donating surplus food from all of its stores to several non-profit organisations which strive to feed thousands of people daily. It also includes Shoprite’s Mobile Soup Kitchens which have fed communities across the country everyday since it began in 2007.

All Shoprite and Checkers stores, together with the Shoprite Group’s head office, will be transformed into production lines from Monday, 18 July, until the end of the month. The staff will also spend 67 minutes of each working day preparing and packing sandwiches for the local charities.

Any customers who are wanting to join forces with Shoprite to fight the hunger battle this Mandela Day or throughout the month can donate R5 or more to the Group’s #ActForChange Fund at any till point in both Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide. All funds collected will be donated to charities and feeding schemes which are working to fight hunger in local communities.
