31 Club encourages reading with new learning centre

A school in the Valley of 1 000 Hills recently opened its brand new Learning Resource Centre to its pupils.

IN just six months, a learning resource centre was erected and fully equipped with books and learning materials for Ukusakwabasha Primary School in KwaNyuswa by the 31 Club.

The handover took place recently and was attended by excited teachers, pupils, supporters, invited guests as well as members of the 31 Club. “We were told about this special school with a dynamic headmaster and dedicated staff who work in a challenging environment, doing their utmost to educate their pupils to the best of their ability,” said Jo Behr, the 31 Club’s head of charities.

Ukusakwabasha Primary School also adopted the Gateway into Reading programme, developed and run by the Neema Foundation in Kloof. Currently all learners are being taught in English through reading and phonetics and Neema volunteers visit the school weekly. “A special mention must be made of The Learn Project, which donated more than 700 beautiful books,” said Jo.

The 31 Club has been active in KwaZulu-Natal for 54 years and continues making a difference to several charity organisations and less fortunate people within the community. Its members work in a voluntary capacity, organising various functions throughout the year to raise funds. “These funds are used for projects such as this, as well as to purchase much-needed items for several charities that approach the club for assistance each year,” said Jo.
