Residents work together to fight crime

Bellair COP chairman Jan Potgieter said it was in the best interest of residents to form their own COP to help restore Bellair to a safe community where children and women would feel safe walking on the streets again.

RESIDENTS came out in support of the first community orientated policing meeting on Friday, 20 May at TAFTA Park. The gathering was called because of the ongoing crime, housebreakings, drugs, prostitution, rape and other social ills in Bellair.

Although the meeting was open to the public, only a few residents showed up and chairman of the COP, Jan Potgieter said he would like to see more people attending the meeting as crime in the area affects everyone.

He said it was in the best interests of residents to form their own COP to help restore Bellair to a safe community where children and women would feel safe walking on the streets again. “Within a space of two weeks two women were murdered in the area. I am asking that we stand together as community to fight crime. Women and children cannot walk on these streets day or night,” said Potgieter.

Residents then raised their concerns about drug dealings and prostitution in the area. They all agreed that working together would help curb these social ills.
