One arrested, three at large

The members closed in on the suspects despite the heavy fire from them and gave chase on foot through dense bushes.

IN the early hours of Thursday morning, 2 June, SAPS Malvern Crime Prevention members headed by Capt Mano Govender were patrolling the area when they noticed a suspicious looking car. According to Corporate Communication Officer, W/O Radhika Marimuthu, the members conducted a vehicle check and found that the registration was false.

“The members switched on flashing blue lights and sirens. The suspects sped off, while simultaneously opening fire on the members. A high speed chase followed with the members returning fire. The suspects then crashed their vehicle onto two oncoming vehicles before coming to a halt. They persisted in their heavy firing at the members while alighting from their vehicle,” she explained.

The members closed in on the suspects despite the heavy fire from them and gave chase on foot through dense bushes. W/O Marimuthu said one suspect was arrested and that a massive search was being conducted for the remaining three. No police personnel were injured.

Station commander Lt-Col Valarine Reddy commended Capt Govender, the visible policing head, and his members, for their valiant call to duty leading to the arrest. She commended the members for their valorous act of pursuing suspects despite coming under heavy fire. “SAPS Malvern has a zero tolerance to all criminals and criminal acts,” she said.
