St Mary’s promotes healthy lifestyles

The hospital has taken a decision to conduct fun walks on the second Friday of every month.

AS part of achieving outcome two of the negotiated service delivery agreement (NSDA), which is ‘A long life and healthy lifestyle for all South Africans’, St Mary’s Hospital took a decision to conduct fun walks on the second Friday of every month.

Thabiso Dlamini, public relations officer at St Mary’s, said in an era in which the majority of people do not have adequate time for exercise and where there is a burgeoning increase in chronic lifestyle diseases, this campaign is intended to lend a helping hand to enforcing positive change in our employees’ occupational health and healthy lifestyles.

“The second fun walk was held on Friday, 15 April and our employees swapped their work uniforms for casual wear and walked on a trek from the hospital to the monastery and back to the institution.

“More than 20 employees participated in this initiative. At the halfway mark (the main gate of the Monastery), a Virgin Active fitness manager conducted stretching exercises at the turning point, which included squats and other energy-zapping techniques,” he said.

Dlamini addded that no participant was admitted to hospital at the end of the fun walk.

“This simply means that all our participants are as fit as a fiddle, although only a few yearned for a massage and a long bath, which was not possible due to work commitments,” said Dlamini.
