Life Healthcare’s laundry unit celebrates first birthday

The Regional laundry unit was proud to announce it has achieved its target of three million laundry items.

LIFE Healthcare KZN regional laundry, situated in New Germany, recently celebrated its first birthday.

Having opened its impressive 1 800m² laundry facility, which services its Durban-based Life Healthcare hospitals at a cost of more than R23-million, in April last year, the laundry, which runs 18 hours a day, has a staff complement of 35. By the end of this month it will have achieved is target of processing three million items during its first year of operation.

According to Vivan Govender, laundry manager, the laundry was established to enable the region to take control of the quality of the linen in the hospitals, to provide a cost-effective and efficient laundry service and to contribute towards making patients’ stay in hospital as comfortable as possible.

Due to the fact that the laundry has a dual electrical and diesel power combination, there is no interruption to the service. The latest development has been the installation of a backup water supply to ensure continuous production during the current drought conditions.

“We are extremely proud of having achieved our target of three million laundry items. This is an enormous achievement and has been made possible by the wonderful team of energetic staff who are thoroughly passionate about their work,” said Govender.

Exuberant staff from the Life Healthcare KZN laundry celebrated its first birthday with snacks, cake and a specially-dedicated song which they performed with great gusto. Their irrepressible enthusiasm was contagious and thoroughly uplifting.
