Karate club looks forward to 2016

Some of the students will be representing KZN in the National Karate Championship.

STUDENTS from the Westville Karate Club, which is affiliated to the International Federation of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate South Africa, recently participated in gashku (outdoor training) at the Hazelmere Dam.

The training was conducted by club instructors, Sensei Brian Govender (fifth Dan) and Sensei Mishelle Govender (third Dan). The day started out with a two-hour training session which focused on improving students’ fitness as well as their competition and self-defence skills. Students enjoyed some fun and games after the training.

Sensei Brian and Sensei Mishelle honoured their students with awards for their achievements in karate for the year 2015.

”I am very pleased with the performance of my students and we are now focusing our efforts on making 2016 an even more successful year for the Westville Karate Club,” said Sensei Brian. “We are honoured to have had two senior students – Leah Govender and Shashidhar Surianarayan – representing KZN in the National Karate Championship on Saturday, 19 March at the Tongaat Sports Centre.
