Inconsistency with new motor licensing rule

People shared their experiences about the new motor licensing regulations.

AFTER many complaints about long queues, lack of forms and lack of information at the Post Office or licensing authority, the Highway Mail published an article about the change in regulations.

Kwanele Ncwalane, the KZN Department of Transport’s communications officer, said, “It is also important to highlight that the onus rests with the owner of a motor vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is licensed timeously, even in the event of the licence renewal notice not being received.”

The following information will have to produced in order to register vehicles, renew licence discs or driving licenses: their full names, date of birth, identity number and business registration number (if applicable), along with any form of acceptable identification, as well as proof of postal and residential address by means of any utility account, provided that in the case where the person is not the person in whose name the utility account is issued, the person in whose name the utility account is issued must make an affidavit or affirmation declaring that the person resides at the address and the affidavit or affirmation must be accompanied by the utility account of that person.

But there seems to be instability when it comes to people’s experiences at the Post Office or licensing authority.

These are some of the comments fom the Highway Mail readers:

Barend Bekker: I just renewed my licence disk for my car and a only copy of  my ID or driver’s licence was required.

Louise Schaap: The Licensing Authority no longer sends out renewal notices. Now you have to queue for a form to fill in to ‘renew without a notice’, and then queue again to renew.

Ravi Nagan Naidoo: Theres no consistency in this. My wife renewed our vehicle licence last week at the post office in Johannesburg without any fuss.
