Fuel spillage contaminates Alverstone property

The spillage has caused families and their animals to have to seek alternative accommodation.

On Tuesday, 15 December part of the Transnet pipeline which is used to transport fuel from Durban to Gauteng burst in Sparrow Lane, Alverstone, resulting in the spillage of petrol.

The company has employed environmental emergency response specialists who have commenced with the environmental clean up. The company is working in partnership with all relevant stakeholders and regulators including local Emergency Services.

The spillage has caused families and their animals to seek alternative accommodation in the meantime.

“Transnet continues to monitor possible impact on water supply in the area. Fuel supply to Gauteng is not affected. In line with our risk management processes a formal investigation to determine the cause of the incident will be held,” said Saret Knoetze, Manager, Public Relations, Communications and Marketing for Transnet.
