St Lizzie’s supports Diabetes SA

November 14 is National Diabetes Day and Diabetes SA, together with FutureLife, will be fundraising throughout the country.

ST Elizabeth’s Pre-Primary School in Westville held a Denim for Diabetes day in support of Diabetes SA, as November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

One of the pupils, Noah Harding, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of three. He has just celebrated his one-year anniversary and his friends at St Lizzies showed their support by raising funds for Diabetes SA.

Noah wore his Diabetes Superhero shirt, specially made to encourage him in his ongoing daily coping with his changed lifestyle. His brother, Kai, is his Superhero Sidekick.

His mother, Melanie, visited the school to train the teachers and give them information to understand what living with diabetes entails. She also read the children a story about ‘Coco the Monkey’, a character developed in collaboration with Lilley Pharmaceuticals to help children deal with diabetes. Each child was given a short information brochure to take home to inform parents of the signs to look out for in diabetes diagnosis.

“Having a diabetic child means that the whole family is involved. Constant monitoring of sugar levels has become a way of life,” said Melanie. “Noah is a happy, well-adjusted child who has quickly learnt to cope with ongoing sugar tests and insulin injections.”
